Our desire to live a long healthy life often leads us through a hit and miss search for miracle products and in recent years, the Acai berry has taken pride of place in the Western media.
With stories of dieters losing 10 pounds in 10 days, to cases of consumers getting scammed and its entry into the superfood hall of fame – it seems that despite all we hear and know about the Acai berry, very few us of are actually aware of the truth about the Acai berry.
So what is the truth? Is it a miraculous solution to weight loss? Is it a health filled fruit with super healing powers? Or is all the hysteria surrounding the Acai berry just a very clever scam?
Well, the Acai berry, is undoubtedly, a very healthy fruit. As well as being rich in healthy omega fats, it also contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and E.
It’s even high in fibre, which is largely where it’s notoriety as a weight loss supplement has come from (the fibre expands in the stomach, helping us to feel full quicker and for longer, so we eat less).
However, it is not a miracle cure to all ills (what is?!) and neither is the Acai berry alone going to make the weight fall off and give you the body of Kate Moss (because again, what will?!). However, it can be an effective aid to weight loss, if used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, and expectations for the results it can achieve are not unrealistic.
It is also, undoubtedly, a valuable addition to any healthy eating program, simply due to the amount of healthy properties the berry offers. In fact, the sheer variety of healthy fats and vitamins it contains does make it stand above many of its competitors in the health food hall of fame. Therefore it is possible that, when used in combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise this wonderful berry can help in the mission to live a long life.
However, there is a dark side, that doesn’t just come in the form of elaborate and unfounded claims – the Acai berry scams. The internet today is awash with Acai berry scams since it has been so easy for crooks to take advantage of people’s commitment to healthy eating and desire to lose weight.
The main Acai berry scams to watch out for involve ‘free trials’ and the sale of substandard products.
The ‘free trial’ scam involves luring unsuspecting consumers into a contract to keep buying the product on a monthly basis, at a vastly inflated price.
They do this by offering shoppers a ‘free trial’, which has to be ended by a certain date in order to prevent the start of these very expensive payments. However, it is not made clear when this date is, or the consequences of failing to end the trial.
Even if the consumer is aware of the small print involved, it is often made very difficult to cancel since the company conveniently fails to provide a contact number, or there is no one to pick up the phone when you call.
The second scam simply involves the supply of a very substandard product. Often it will be very low in actual Acai berry and sometimes there will be no trace of the berry in the product at all. And occasionally, in place of the berry, the manufacturers may add some nasty chemicals that are able to trigger some even nastier side effects.
Yet thankfully, avoiding Acai berry scams is quite easy. To prevent falling victim to a ‘free trial’ scam, you could simply neglect to sign up to any free trials.
However some of the ‘free trials’ are genuine. To determine which these are, research the company. A successful search should reveal all positive or negative reviews about the supplier, and let you know which ones are trustworthy.
You should also read the terms and conditions very carefully. I know it’s a bore, but in an industry such as this, that is rife with Acai berry scams, it will be worth it. And finally, check the contact details of the company – and check they work. This means phoning any number provided to make sure that it rings and that someone picks up.
And if you want to make sure the product you buy is the real thing, again – research. You would also do well to avoid buying any products that don’t state they are 100% Acai berry. If the product isn’t clear on what it contains, then you can presume what’s in it isn’t good.
So there you go, if you want to live a long life, focus on healthy eating, and consider the Acai berry as a valuable addition. But be careful not to fall for any scams and remember, it certainly isn’t a miracle fruit, and if you’re going to consume it, you still need to keep eating as healthy as you can and taking regular exercise as unfortunately, the Acai berry alone is never going to be enough.
